Coaching Philosophy

What Is A Coaching Philosophy?

A coaching philosophy are beliefs, views and principles that guide behaviour which helps a coach to maintain these beliefs when making choices (Burton & Raedeke 2008). The behaviours that the coach portrays reflect a deeper set of values held by the coach creating realistic expectations in sessions and goals (Lyle, 1999).

The Importance Of A Coaching Philosophy

A coaching philosophy should be personal to the coach as it is their beliefs and views that they are wanting to share with others. It should be psychological to develop coaches' effectiveness and develop their practice. It is used to develop their own understanding and knowldge of the sport and activities they are running whilst also developing their athletes to the best of their ability physically, socially, psychologically, tactically and technically (Nash, 2015).

My Philosophy

During my degree I felt confused and quite lost in terms of developing or having such strong beliefs in terms of being a coach and developing athlete's potential. I think it was because my peers seemed to hold quite strong views about the specific sport they were coaching and i just wanted to explore everyone's views and try and apply that to my own coaching and .practice. During my final year at uni I started to understand what a coaching philosophy was and to come up with ideas on what mine could be as a coach. It wasn't until after my degree that I have learnt more about what a coaching philosophy is by reviewing literature and speaking to other coaches.
